Nordstrom(JWN) calls will be a massive money maker, for people that jump in early. 💰

2020.09.29 18:52 CallMeZeta Nordstrom(JWN) calls will be a massive money maker, for people that jump in early. 💰

Positions: JWN 1/20/23
TL:DR Nordstrom is currently so undvalued that even picking up one of these contacts, could potential for astronomical returns. This LEAP is currently going for only a few hundred dollars per contract but you can choose an earlier expiration if you're short on funds, and still have a chance to reel in short short term gains.
-------
Nordstrom is a high end, American clothing retailer that sells high end brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada and more. They also have a more affordable branch known as Nordstrom Rack, which appeals to the typical middle class. As I've hinted, their target customer are the very people that have seen the LEAST negative impact, as a result of Coronavirus turmoil. Being the upper middle class and wealthy.
While they are typically located in high end malls. They have taken improving their online experience seriously. Implementing things such as full outfit recommendations to generate more sales per customer. They also have optimized they're inventory to make sure that if they have a particular clothing peice in stock. No matter where it may be located, they do their best to get it in the hands of the customer willing to pay for it. Even if it happens to be the very last one in stock held in far off retail location. This has caused them to see a 50 percent increased in new customer acquisitions on their website, this year alone.
Nordstrom as a company has seen an unjustifiable beat down during the Coronavirus pandemic and hasn't recovered since. Wall Street has lumped this stock in with failing retailers such as Macy's and shifted their attention to booming tech stocks which have ballooned them to astronomically overvalued levels. Making it a very risky play for people jumping on the train late. If you're looking for an options contract to hold long term that the mass public hasn't caughten onto yet. I would pick up JWN calls. While the stock may seem weak now, a key strategy to success in this market is to buy when others are fearful.
And if you don't want to hear it from me. Take it from hedge funds, whose sole goal is to outperform the market. Throughout this month, more and more funds has been carving out positions in this stock. According to Yahoo Finance. The largest stake in Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE:JWN) was held by Arrowstreet Capital, which reported holding $47.7 million worth of stock at the end of September(this month). It was followed by Antipodes Partners with a $32.8 million position. Other investors bullish on the company included Steadfast Capital Management, Millennium Management, and Citadel Investment Group. In terms of the portfolio weights assigned to each position Pacifica Capital Investments allocated the biggest weight to Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE:JWN), around 3.33% of its 13F portfolio. Stamos Capital is also relatively very bullish on the stock, earmarking 1.71 percent of its 13F equity portfolio to JWN.
I hate the preface this again, but I feel like I need to for everyone turning a blind eye to this. Tech stocks have already taken liftoff. You've likely missed your chance with many of these stocks. But you still have a chance to reel in massive returns from these neglected sectors of the stock market. Nordstrom hasn't rebounded yet. And that is exactly why now is the best time to get a great position for cheap.
I would pick up some long term calls, forget about it, and thank yourself later. Don't stress yourself out by constantly checking this stock in the short term unless you're planning on adding more contracts to your position overtime like I am. When the time comes for a reversal. It will be swift takeoff. And people will be kicking themselves for overlooking such easy play.
I am not a financial advisor. Don't sue me

2020.04.28 20:01 autotldr Facebook Restructures Its Security Teams

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 60%. (I'm a bot)
April 28, 2020, 12:47 p.m. ET.SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook has restructured some of its security teams in a move that displaces more than two dozen employees.
The employees, whose duties included anticipating cyberattacks and preventing hackers from breaching the platform, were in Facebook's offices in London, Seattle and Menlo Park, Calif.Facebook has dissolved and dispersed its security group over the last two years, said the people.
"To stay ahead of evolving security threats, we're investing more in automated detection and bringing in new skills as we continue to grow our security team overall," a company spokeswoman said in a statement.
Its security operations were previously housed together in one large group under Alex Stamos, the chief information security officer.
After Mr. Stamos left Facebook in 2018, the security teams were reassigned and reported into different parts of the company, such as engineering and policy.
Facebook is looking for new approaches to bolster security across its services, according to two of the people.

2019.10.30 23:01 stitchkingdom John Stamos to Star in David E Kelley’s ‘Big Shot’

BURBANK, Calif. (Oct. 30, 2019) -- John Stamos has been cast in the lead role in the Disney + original series, “Big Shot,” written and executive produced by David E. Kelley and Dean Lorey and produced by ABC Studios, a part of Disney Television Studios. Brad Garrett (“Single Parents”), who pitched the original idea to Kelley, is an executive producer on the one-hour dramedy, as is Bill D’Elia who will direct the first episode.
The 10-episode series follows a temperamental college basketball coach (Stamos) who gets fired from his job and must take a teaching and coaching job at an elite all-girls private high school.
“John is absolutely perfect for this role and we are thrilled that he’ll bring his incredible talent and heart to this project,” says Agnes Chu, senior vice president, Content, Disney+. “Disney has long been known for our aspirational sports stories, and we are so proud to be working with David and Dean on a relatable series that both inspires and entertains. It’s a great fit for Disney+.”
Two-time Emmy® Award nominated actor and producer John Stamos currently stars in the hit drama “You,” for Netflix. He’s also playing ‘Chef Louis’ in “The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!” airing Tuesday, November 5 on ABC.
His additional television credits include the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning drama “ER,” “Necessary Roughness,” “Galavant,” “Entourage,” “Two and A Half Men” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, “Scream Queens,” and “Grandfathered.”
In 2016, “Fuller House,” a multi-camera comedy spin-off of iconic comedy “Full House,” premiered on Netflix and became an overnight sensation, with Stamos serving as an executive producer and guest star. The series received a 2018 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Children’s Program and is currently filming its fifth season.
Stamos is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, ICM Partners and attorney Bill Sobel.
Multiple award-winning writer David E. Kelley most recently wrote and executive produced the HBO drama series “Big Little Lies,” for which he won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series. His long list of credits includes “Ally McBeal,” “Boston Legal,” “Chicago Hope,” “L.A. Law,” “The Practice” and “Picket Fences” among many others.
Dean Lorey’s credits include “My Wife and Kids,” “Arrested Development,” “The Crazy Ones,” “Those Who Can't,” “Powerless” and “iZombie.”
Brad Garrett won three Emmys® and a SAG Award for his role as Robert Barone on the iconic television series “Everybody Loves Raymond.” He was also nominated for an Emmy and SAG Award for his portrayal of The Great One in the telefilm “Gleason.” Garrett currently co-stars in ABC’s hit comedy “Single Parents.”
Director Bill D’Elia has had a long and fruitful working relationship with David E. Kelley, including “Chicago Hope,” “The Practice,” “Boston Legal,” “Ally McBeal,” as well as other projects including, “How To Get Away With Murder.”

2019.03.07 08:59 EnriqueZGZ The Facebook Cryptocurrency Plan

News of the largest social media platform developing its own cryptocurrency first surfaced in December of last year. As we would, later on, find out Facebook was developing a crypto coin that would allow users to transfer money using the WhatsApp messaging app with an initial focus on the remittance market in India. Fast forward a few months later, and we have more details about what the cryptocurrency will be all about and when it’s set to launch. Below we are going to discuss more on what we already know about Facebook’s cryptocurrency plan.

A Short History of Facebook And Virtual Currencies

This isn’t the first time that Facebook will be trying its hand with virtual currencies. Surprisingly, the social media giant has already had two previous experiments that didn’t fare so well. The first venture was through Facebook Credits a coin that enabled people to buy items in games and non-gaming applications on the platform. At the time $1 was equal to 10 Facebook Credits and the coin was available in 15 currencies including USD, euros, and sterling pounds.
However, the virtual currency caused headaches for international payments because of fluctuating exchange rates and was shut down only two years later after launch. Then there was Facebook Gifts which was launched in 2012 just to be shut down two years later also. The problem according to Josh Constine was that the social media giant never found a way to solve localization and distance issues to make Facebook Gifts work internationally.
However, not all the platform’s efforts that have failed as it has managed to achieve some success with Facebook Messenger Payments which was launched in the US in 2015 and expanded to Europe two years later. The platform allows for a secure and convenient way for users to send and receive money right in the messenger threads.

Enter FaceCoin

However, in FaceCoin, Facebook will be trying to emulate messenger payments and not Credits and Gifts. The new cryptocurrency will be based on the blockchain and will be a stablecoin that will be backed by a basket of fiat currencies to ensure its price is stable. Interestingly the virtual currency will be a private stablecoin which is unique since there is no other that exists so far. So if we are to believe Facebook, this coin is going to be a big deal.
One of the main concerns of FaceCoin according to Alex Stamos is that “a completely private and encrypted messaging service tied to an open, Zerocoin-like, zk-SNARK backed cryptocurrency and backed by a tech giant would instantly become the go-to mechanism for global money laundering, tax evasion, and just general criming.”
However, Stamos believes on the other hand by not having a mathematically backed privacy feature and having all this data in a single place will be a massive source of privacy and security risk. And if this is the case, he believes that many countries that have leverage over Facebook will use this opportunity to get access to private information.
For this reason, he believes that no existing tech project has a critical privacy/safety balancing act than this one.

Problems FaceCoin Has To Overcome To Ensure It Succeeds

If FaceCoin is to succeed, then the team behind the project will have to figure out how they can make the stablecoin easily convertible back to fiat around the world. It’s no secret that the current problem with stablecoins is that no business is accepting them.
This means users have to convert them back to fiat currencies before they can use them to do purchases and other things. So even if Facebook proceeded to offer goods and services that can be purchased using the stablecoin, this would lead them back to Facebook Credits all over again a situation we believe they will try to avoid.
As for remittances, which is a massive market and the apparent target market there is the issue of FaceCoin not being recognized as a legal tender in various locations. Also, given the process will involve having to convert the currency to fiat before it’s used there is a chance the process will be much slower, clumsier, not very user-friendly and it could be even more expensive.
For now, there is little known about Facebook’s plans; however, there are two ways in which the platform can overcome the many hurdles it will likely face with the cryptocurrency. One is establishing partnerships with other businesses in a way that they will accept FaceCoin which will make it valuable – which will be nearly impossible.
The other alternative will be to establish a relationship with cryptocurrency exchanges around the world and have the currency easily converted to different modes of payment like Mpesa or other mobile money platforms. This would make the crypto-coin seamless, fast and user-friendly when it comes to international remittances – a market that is currently worth around $500 billion a year. It would also allow anyone with a mobile phone and a Facebook app to maintain a personal account that has stable coins and is backed by hard currencies.

The Team

The FaceCoin cryptocurrency team is led by David Marcus who is the former president of Paypal and was previously in charge of Facebook’s Messenger app. He was appointed as the head of the blockchain unit in May of last year. So far the team is believed to consist of over 50 employees, and the company is on a hiring spree. A quick check on LinkedIn reveals names like Kevin Weil who is the vice president of product, Evan Cheng who is the director of engineering, Dave Hrycyszyn who is the technical program manager and Nate Gonzalez who is a product manager.
The team is also expanding, and on Facebook’s careers site there are 18 blockchain related jobs. Some of the advertised positions include Business operations manager, product manager, business operations manager, global security strategic partner, growth product manager, software engineer and a data engineer.
The cryptocurrency is set to launch sometime in the first quarter of 2019, and we will have to wait and see if it doesn’t end up as Facebook Credits or Gifts.

2018.10.26 12:00 autotldr Apple boss decries 'data industrial complex' while pocketing, er, billions to hook Google into iOS

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 66%. (I'm a bot)
Analysis At a European conference for privacy watchdogs on Wednesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook praised EU data protection supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli for defending privacy and warned that technology, for all its utility, can do harm rather than good.
Apple it might be argued does not see it that way when it sells Google access to iOS customers for $9bn. That's how much Google is expected to pay Apple this year to be the default search provider on iDevices, according to a Goldman Sachs estimate.
Alex Stamos, former CISO of Facebook and presently an adjunct professor at Stanford University in the US, took the opportunity to point out a longstanding inconsistency in Cook's position, specifically Apple's desire to do business in China, where authorities have legal support to obtain just about any data they might want and algorithmic governance is an aspiration.
Stamos, via Twitter said, "I believe that Chinese people should have the same access to fundamental human rights as the rest of the world. Apple needs to document how they protect data stored by a PRC-owned cloud provider."
Stamos would like Apple to explain the terms under which its government-owned local partner Guizhou-Cloud Big Data Industry can access iCloud backup data.
Cook in his speech said Apple supports a federal data protection law in the US similar to the GDPR. In a phone interview with The Register, Matthew Heiman, senior fellow at the National Security Institute and chair of the Cyber and Privacy Working Group at the Regulatory Transparency Project, cautioned that Apple's celebration of its position on privacy should be seen in light of its business model and competitive concerns.

The Internet’s ‘Original Sin’ Endangers More Than Privacy
Internet advertising started simply, but over time organically evolved a mess of middle players and congealed into a surveillance economy. Today, between end users, publishers and advertisers stand a throng of agencies, trading desks, demand side platforms, network exchanges and yield optimizers. Intermediaries track users in an attempt to improve revenue.

Globalcoinreport.com Covers Brave and BAT
Since inception, Basic Attention Token or, BAT has attracted the interest of millions of crypto enthusiasts and long-term HODLers. It has always been an interesting blockchain project which is specifically designed and developed for revolutionizing digital advertising entirely. Millions more people will use Brave's ad-blocking browser by year-end, startup predicts
Brave Software has 2.2 million people using its ad-blocking web browser and expects it'll roughly double that, or more, by year's end. "User growth remains strong, and we anticipate millions more by the end of 2018," Brave said in a blog post Friday. Roughly three quarters use the browser on mobile devices and one quarter on personal computers, and most users are in the United States or Europe, Brave said.

We can expect to see sponsored links in the open-source Firefox browser as of next week, but we don’t have to sell our souls to get Mozilla the extra revenue it needs to survive. Mozilla says all the analytics will happen on the client side, keeping users’ data private.

A Facebook software engineer allegedly used his access to stalk women
Facebook has fired a security engineer who allegedly took advantage of his position to access information he then used to stalk women online, the social media giant confirmed to NBC News Tuesday. “We are investigating this as a matter of urgency," Alex Stamos, Chief Security Officer at Facebook, said in a statement to NBC News.
"It’s important that people’s information is kept secure and private when they use Facebook," he said. "It’s why we have strict policy controls and technical restrictions so employees only access the data they need to do their jobs – for example to fix bugs, manage customer support issues or respond to valid legal requests. Employees who abuse these controls will be fired.”

Opinion: Silicon Valley Can't Be Trusted With Our History
One broken link at a time, one of the most heavily documented historical events of the social media era could fade away before our eyes. It’s the paradox of the internet age: Smartphones and social media have created an archive of publicly available information unlike any in human history — an ocean of eyewitness testimony. But while we create almost everything on the internet, we control almost none of it.

Publishers rebuke Google's interpretation of EU privacy law
Google is forcing media firms that generate revenue from its advertising services to accept unreasonable responsibilities under a new European privacy law, four major publisher trade groups told the Alphabet Inc unit late Sunday in a letter seen by Reuters.

Are Google and Facebook Undermining Europe’s Privacy Rules? Less than a month before tough new European privacy rules take effect, there are growing concerns from regulators, publishers, and privacy watchdogs about the ways that two internet giants—Google and Facebook—plan to implement the regulations. The critics say the companies are squelching the promise of the new rules, and will leave European internet users no better off. https://www.wired.com/story/are-google-and-facebook-undermining-europes-privacy-rules

2018.04.04 16:25 intlnews Facebook and the "big bad" Russians

Just recently, The Verge wrote that
Facebook says it has suspended 70 Facebook accounts, 138 Facebook pages, and 65 Instagram accounts controlled by the Internet Research Agency. Chief security officer Alex Stamos announced the news today, posting a handful of sample ads and pages that it says were run by the Russia-linked disinformation outfit. “The IRA has consistently used inauthentic accounts to deceive and manipulate people,” writes Stamos. “It’s why we remove every account we find that is linked to the organization — whether linked to activity in the US, Russia or elsewhere”...finding the pages took “months of work” by Facebook. Around 95 percent of the pages with language-specific content were aimed at Russian speakers, and 1.08 million users followed at least one of the pages...Stamos says they were removed purely for being secretly associated with the IRA, not for problems with the content. Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post that this update was “about taking down [IRA] pages targeting people living in Russia,” as opposed to ones designed to influence foreign elections. “This Russian agency has repeatedly acted deceptively and tried to manipulate people in the US, Europe, and Russia — and we don’t want them on Facebook anywhere in the world,” he wrote...Facebook has consistently denounced the IRA for betraying Facebook’s core ethos of “authenticity.”...Facebook released a tool that lets people see if they liked or followed a propaganda account, and it plans to update this tool to include these new pages.
Considering that this is against Russian users, it begs the question: who is Facebook serving with this action? Clearly it is not the Russian people, but undoubtedly it is symbolic, aimed to curry favor with the military, homeland insecurity, and intelligence establishments. It also shows Facebook caught up in the whole Russophobia without question.
This article in the Verge, linked to a Facebook press release, titled "Authenticity Matters: The IRA Has No Place on Facebook", saying that
This morning we removed 70 Facebook and 65 Instagram accounts — as well as 138 Facebook Pages — that were controlled by the Russia-based Internet Research Agency (IRA). Many of the Pages also ran ads, all of which have been removed. Of the Pages that had content, the vast majority of them (95%) were in Russian — targeted either at people living in Russia or Russian-speakers around the world including from neighboring countries like Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. Uncovering this activity took months of work by our team and I wanted to explain why we took this action...Many human rights activists, for example, have to hide their true identities to stay safe. But we’ve worked hard to establish authenticity as a social norm because it’s at the heart of most meaningful connections on Facebook. The IRA has repeatedly used complex networks of inauthentic accounts to deceive and manipulate people who use Facebook, including before, during and after the 2016 US presidential elections. It’s why we don’t want them on Facebook. We removed this latest set of Pages and accounts solely because they were controlled by the IRA — not based on the content. This included commentary on domestic and international political issues, the promotion of Russian culture and tourism as well as debate on more everyday issues...The IRA has consistently used inauthentic accounts to deceive and manipulate people. It’s why we remove every account we find that is linked to the organization — whether linked to activity in the US, Russia or elsewhere. We know that the IRA — and other bad actors seeking to abuse Facebook — are always changing their tactics to hide from our security team. We expect we will find more, and if we do we will take them down too. But we’ll keep fighting and we’re investing heavily in more people and better technology to constantly improve safety on Facebook.
Such a press release shows that they are serving the capitalist class, and utmost the murderous empire using terms like "human rights activists" and such, conveniently not talking about their efforts in conjunction with Zionists to suppress Palestinian resistance. This is also a clearly Russophobic response as well, without question. If they really wanted to, why not apply this to white supremacists, horrid Zionists, or other bigots? It seems too convenient for them to apply to the Russians.
Zuckerberg's post is similar:
Today we're taking an important step to protect the integrity of elections around the world by taking down more than 270 pages and accounts operated by a Russian organization called the Internet Research Agency (IRA). Most of our actions against the IRA to date have been to prevent them from interfering in foreign elections. This update is about taking down their pages targeting people living in Russia. This Russian agency has repeatedly acted deceptively and tried to manipulate people in the US, Europe, and Russia -- and we don't want them on Facebook anywhere in the world...After 2016, we found that the Russian IRA had set up a network of hundreds of fake accounts to spread divisive content and interfere in the US presidential election. We began investigating their activity globally and taking down their pages and accounts. Since then, we have improved our techniques to prevent nation states from interfering in foreign elections, and we've built more advanced AI tools to remove fake accounts more generally...In France, leading up to the presidential election in 2017, we found and took down 30,000 fake accounts. In Germany, before the 2017 elections, we worked directly with the Federal Office for Information Security to learn from them about the threats they saw and to share information. In the US Senate Alabama special election last year, we deployed new AI tools that proactively detected and removed fake accounts from Macedonia trying to spread misinformation...We now have about 15,000 people working on security and content review. We'll have more than 20,000 by the end of this year. These efforts have all made it harder for nation states to interfere in foreign elections. With today's update, we have now identified a large network the IRA is using to manipulate people in Russia itself. This is the next step towards removing them from Facebook entirely...While we respect people and governments sharing political views on Facebook, we do not allow them to set up fake accounts to do this. When an organization does this repeatedly, we take down all of their pages, including ones that may not be fake themselves. The pages and accounts we took down today were removed because they were controlled by the IRA, not based on the content they shared. This particular set of pages and accounts was used to target people in Russia and people speaking Russian in neighboring countries like Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine...Organizations like the IRA are sophisticated adversaries who are constantly evolving, but we'll keep improving our techniques to stay ahead -- especially when it comes to protecting the integrity of elections.
This shows that Facebook worked with the French and German governments, and possibly the U$ government, with the worrisome idea that pages were taken down because they were "controlled by the IRA" not because of their content. This idea of "control" is one that can be manipulated easily. With 20,000 people by the end of the year working on security and content review, this will undeniably help capitalism without question. It is the suppression of independent news sources which worries me.
In December 2017, The Verge wrote that
...Facebook announced that it would create a tool for users to see if they follow pages and accounts that were linked to Russian-backed groups. That tool is now live, and you can see for yourself if any of the pages you liked were created by the Internet Research Agency. You can find the tool in Facebook’s Help Center, and it will show you a list of the various pages that you follow that are linked to the Kremlin-backed group, as well as when you liked and followed it. You can also log in with your Instagram account. However, the tool won’t tell you if you shared or even saw content from the pages. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg initially dismissed the notion that his company could have influenced the 2016 presidential election, but the company later admitted that Russian-backed organizations placed ads through the site, and that upwards of 10 million people saw them.
This was one-sided however: it didn't apply to U$ propaganda, of course, only to so-called "Russian propaganda." Russophobia was clear without question.
In October 2017, The Verge wrote that:
Facebook says that it displayed Russia’s divisive election ads to 10 million people, most of whom saw the ads after the election was over. It’s not clear how many impressions that equates to (it’s possible one person saw multiple ads), but Facebook says that 44 percent of the ads were displayed before the 2016 election, and 56 percent came after. Facebook says it’s identified more than 3,000 ads in total, stemming from a Kremlin-linked group known as the Internet Research Agency. The details were released following Facebook’s disclosures to Congress earlier today. The company shared the 3,000-some ads with legislators and committed to hiring 1,000 more moderators to review ad placements in the future. Facebook says that a quarter of the ads it identified were never shown to anyone, likely because they were targeted to too specific of a group. “Most of the ads appear to focus on divisive social and political messages across the ideological spectrum, touching on topics from LGBT matters to race issues to immigration to gun rights,” writes Elliot Schrage, Facebook’s policy VP. “A number of them appear to encourage people to follow Pages on these issues.” Today’s disclosure reveals the extent to which Russia’s propaganda was allowed to spread over the platform. The Internet Research Agency is believed to have paid Facebook $100,000 to promote the ads, simply by going through Facebook’s normal ad-placement tools, which are open to anyone. Facebook says, in fact, that many of the Internet Research Agency’s ads wouldn’t have violated its terms of service if the group hadn’t misled viewers about who was behind them. “Most of [the ads], if they had been run by authentic individuals, anywhere, they could have remained on the platform,” Schrage writes. He also adds that, “If Americans conducted a coordinated, inauthentic operation — as the Russian organization did in this case — we would take their ads down, too.” In response, Facebook says it’s putting in new safeguards to prevent abuse of its ad tools. In addition to hiring reviewers, it’s also going to require that advertisers “confirm the business or organization they represent,” potentially helping to weed out fake groups. Even before Facebook disclosed these figures, it was becoming increasingly clear that Russia’s ads had made an impact. The Daily Beast found evidence of Russian actors successfully organizing pro-Trump rallies on Facebook, while other Russian-created political pages gained followers, shared memes, and posted hateful rhetoric.
This article is Russophobic garbage. Facebook admits that 1/4 of the ads weren't shown to anyone, that "...44 percent of the ads were displayed before the 2016 election...56 percent came after." So for The Verge to say this had an "impact" is so laughable, putting into question if this even "Russia's propaganda" at all.
We then move onto an article in April 2017 in Reuters which said that
Facebook Inc said on Thursday it suspended 30,000 accounts in France as the social network giant steps up efforts to stop the spread of fake news, misinformation and spam. The move, which comes 10 days before the first round of a hotly contested French presidential election, is among the most aggressive yet by Facebook to move against accounts that violate its terms of service, rather than simply respond to complaints. Facebook is under intense pressure in Europe as governments across the continent threaten new laws and fines unless the company moves quickly to remove extremist propaganda or other content that violates local laws...The pressure on social media sites including Twitter, Google’s YouTube and Facebook has intensified in the run-up to the elections in France and Germany. Facebook already has a program in France to use outside fact-checkers to combat fake news in users’ feeds...In a blog post, Facebook said it was acting against 30,000 fake accounts in France. It said its priority was to remove suspect accounts with high volumes of posting activity and the biggest audiences. Two people familiar with Facebook’s process said the company had strengthened its formula for detecting deceptive accounts being run by automated means. As an example, the new process considers accounts that have smaller circles of friends and that therefore had been less of a priority previously. A key motivator was the need to get tougher on misinformation ahead of the French elections, the people said, although the move also targets accounts that generated spam for financial gain...The company is using automated pattern-recognition to identify repeated posting of the same content and increases in messaging.
Such suppression of accounts is worrisome. We can trust them on face value, and even if we do that, it means that Facebook is trying to engage in concessions toward the annoyed European capitalist class.
We get to the final article, in The Verge in February 2017:
Facebook has launched a campaign to crack down on fake news in France, ahead of the country’s presidential election later this year. As Reuters reports, the social network announced on Monday that it will work with eight French media companies to fact-check and filter news articles that have been reported by users. According to Le Monde, one of Facebook’s partners, the French campaign is similar to an initiative that Facebook launched in the US late last year, and in Germany last month. Both Facebook and Google faced widespread criticism for allowing fake news to spread during the US presidential election, and European leaders have expressed concern that such misinformation could impact upcoming elections across the continent. Under the system, if an article is reported as false by users, it will be sent to a portal that all eight media companies have access to, according to Le Monde. If at least two of the companies confirm the article as false (with links to support their claims), the content will be flagged as disputed in Facebook’s News Feed, and users will see a warning before they share it...Facebook also announced that it will support CrossCheck — an initiative that will allow users to submit questions and gather information from 16 French media partners. CrossCheck was launched by the First Draft News coalition, with support from the Google News Lab. Some French media outlets have already their launched their own initiatives to combat fake news...In its report on the launch of Facebook’s initiative, Le Monde said that French media companies had been reluctant to partner with the social network, amid concerns that the program would place too great a burden on their fact-checking teams. But the newspaper and other companies ultimately decided to sign on, in part because Facebook said that its algorithms could limit the visibility of articles flagged as false.
This efforts undeniably allows capitalist manipulation to affect what people read! That is problematic, to say the least. It also shows that Facebook is serving the capitalist class.

2018.03.21 17:19 autotldr The End for Facebook’s Security Evangelist

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 69%. (I'm a bot)
On Tuesday, Mr. Stamos tweeted that Facebook executives, including the chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, and the chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, "Supported the investigation and disclosure of our work, and I'm glad we put out what we found." He did not address the disputes over the reorganization of Facebook's security team.
Mr. Stamos, a California native and a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, previously worked at start-ups and founded a security consulting firm in San Francisco before joining Yahoo as its chief security officer in mid-2014.He became somewhat of a legend in 2015 when he pushed back on government efforts to weaken security.
Michael S. Rogers, the N.S.A. director, by likening the government's requests to "Drilling a hole in the windshield." A video of the encounter went viral, making Mr. Stamos a celebrated figure in privacy and security circles.
Within Yahoo's security team, known as the "Paranoids," Mr. Stamos was considered an inspiration by many of its young engineers.
Internally, Mr. Stamos repeatedly argued that Facebook needed to act more like a defense contractor in dealing with security, given that the social network was becoming a similar target for nation states.
By October, the relationship between Mr. Stamos and Ms. Sandberg had deteriorated over how to handle Russian interference on Facebook and how best to reorganize Facebook's security team before the midterm elections, according to more than half a dozen people who work or formerly worked at the company.

2017.04.05 03:21 Ayaeron In which a Future Groom Tries to Pre-empt the Issue in a Way That Will Be Considered Either Charming or Condescending

Everything you need to know is in bold. Everything else is just silly attempts at entertainment.
Hey y'all, I'm going to get married in the future. Whoo, all very excited. Thank you, yes she's a wonderful girl. Now that's out of the way. Skip to the bold sentence if you don't like longer
My girlfriend recently was on a webforum that is not this one and that I'm certain some of the more stalker inclined will track down based on the questions I ask here. While I'd recommend you use that time for something else, it's your day and there's 24 lord-given hours in it. Have all the fun you want so long as it doesn't involve crashing my wedding. Vince Vaughn is no longer in vogue and I can't afford to pay for that much catering.
Anyhow, she is a wonderful and enthusiastic girl with a lot of good intentions. Which is how she managed to draw quite a lot of ire by asking every question she could and replying as earnestly as possible. Earnest replies can evoke offense on a website where doing anything against the general consensus seems to invite a parade of boos and jeers. My girlfriend is very, very earnest. For those of you who are convinced I'm scrubbing this story, congratulations you're probably somewhat correct. But I have to go to sleep tonight and not wake up with bruises. That part is a joke.
Anyhow, she got a couple of people upset with her, and I think in part it had to do with a mixture of standard netiquette and a userbase of somewhat fragile egos. When I helpfully and thoughtfully pointed this out, I somehow was not met with a shower of cheers and applause by my mysteriously non-receptive significant other. Weird, right? I am certain she'll recognize how I was totally in the right and the affection will follow. I'm certain that's exactly how it happens.
Anyhow, while I wait on the title to that bridge I bought last week to arrive in the mail, I figured I'd come here with something of a crosspost through the lens of a bumbling albeit well meaning oaf, and ask questions of a reddit based community, which in my experience tend to be helpful enough. I'm going to bold the next part so people can skip the preamble.
The questions for which I am attempting to receive advice, and for which I expect to be lambasted to no end, are as follows:
1. Tattoos: I'm former military, so I've been around a tattoo once or twice and did not have my moral compass obliterated by the experience. I also understand the majority of a wedding day as an extended prop for the birthday of a legal contract. Let's get toasted, I'm financially responsible for you. Anyway, one (several) of our guests have tattoos. One of these will be in the wedding photos, and has offered to cover their tattoos so it doesn't upset the old people that are likely helping to pay for the wedding. I think this individual is a very upstanding person all things considered, and that they're cool as a person who has tattoos. I think it's about as reasonable as asking me to wear a kippah and stop checking out other jewish girls while we're at temple. Minor censorship, not an affront to this person's basic dignity. Does that sound unreasonable to folks? We want to make sure that, even with the voluntary part, we're not asking something inappropriate.
2. Officiant: We are both invested in making this a family event, even if it's a silly one. Part of this is we wanted to ask one of our relatives to actually do the ceremony part. It's not that tricky, they get to read off of a note card. My family has a lot of experience with this, with the majority of my cousins being married by my grandfather. He's a rad dude, and I think he did a great job. But he's also old and I think he's at the age where he'd like to sit down. So we're looking to have another person do it, and her godfather has a very authoritative frame. I recognize that for many the preference is to have an official/professional do it, which is cool. I respect that some folks think that's the way to go. Assuming for a moment though that this is somebody else's wedding, and your own conclusions are not the be all and end all, does anyone have a place or group they recommend for doing this kind of thing? We are afraid we are going to get our credit cards stolen by Nigerian princes who were totally going to do the necessary paperwork, but something came up and they had to flee to a non-extradition country. We are located in nondescript major city in California.
3. [Full House Joke Goes Here]: In the event that our relative prefers to not do our wedding (which we are going to ask them, yes. They can actually say no. I was in the army, and she wanted to be a teacher to make a difference in children's lives: we're both used to disappointment), does anyone know a way I can get in contact with John Stamos? While it will upset me to be the second most attractive man at the venue, I'm willing to do it if we can swing one of the most notable members of a classic situational comedy about family into getting involved. I am totally serious about this and didn't suggest it because my future wife kept asking me for anything I wanted at the wedding, anything at all. I didn't say it to pre empt further questions like I'm an authority on weddings, and if I had done that then it totally didn't work. I'm not an authority on weddings. I think I am actually the opposite, given how much time I have watched divorce court.
4. I still want the spider one from the carnival: I am planning to get a tungsten band because I literally want a slab of unavailability to constantly ward off my startling lack of conviction as well as my longstanding history of lying to my partner for no discernible gain. I also recognize that nobody from that point forward will want to see my super cool ring because nobody in the history of ever has given a shit about such things. She thinks that if she doesn't spend 200 dollars on this thing, I'll tell everyone and she'll be mortified. I told her to buy the 20 dollar one off amazon in bulk so I have backups for when I forget it at a company picnic or a local NASCAR event or a nearby armenian pep rally. What is a good middle ground?
Hey thanks for sticking with this whole post. I hope you have something to say, and even if I disagree I will try to be civil. You're taking your time to offer help and advice and I am not going to condemn you for that effort. Please try not to be too critical though, some of this idiocy is actually kind of important to us. The John Stamos thing is negotiable, though. I'll settle for Michael J. Fox from family ties.
